Uruguay's coast is its great summer secret: several hundred kilometres of Atlantic beach running east from Montevideo to the Brazilian border, ranging from polished resort sand to wild, empty, dune-backed shores where the only footprints are your own. Knowing roughly what each stretch is like saves a lot of guessing and points you at the version of the coast you actually want.
Close to the capital, the beaches are for easy days. The city's own Pocitos and Carrasco, and the resort towns just east like Atlántida and Piriápolis, are handy, gentle and good for a quick swim or a weekend, if not the wildest sand in the country. They're where Montevideo goes to cool off, and there's a pleasant, unpretentious charm to them.
The middle coast brings the glamour and the surf. Punta del Este anchors it, with the calm Mansa and the surf-swept Brava beaches; just east, La Barra and José Ignacio trade high-rise for low-key, boho-chic sand and some of the country's best beach restaurants. This is the stretch that fills the magazines, and in shoulder season it's genuinely lovely.
Push east for the wild stuff. Beyond Punta the coast grows emptier and rawer — La Paloma and La Pedrera for surf and a relaxed summer-town feel, and Cabo Polonio, a roadless village of dunes, sea lions and no mains electricity, for the coast at its most elemental. This is where independent travellers tend to lose their hearts to Uruguay.
Respect the Atlantic wherever you swim. These are open-ocean beaches with real surf, currents and few lifeguards outside the peak weeks, so read the water, swim where others do, and keep an eye on children in the shore break. Treated sensibly the Uruguayan coast is a joy; the reward for heading a little further than the crowds is some of the most beautiful, uncrowded beach in South America.
